This course aims to introduce the basic physical concepts regarding the classical laws of the electromagnetism and the laws governing the interactions between electromagnetic waves and matter

electrostatics. Electric charge and Coulomb's law. Electric field. Gauss theorem. Electric potential. First Maxwell's equation. Electric dipole. Conductors and electric field. Electric capacity. Condensers. Electrostatic energy. Energy density. Dielectrics. Electric current. Current density and continuity equation. Electric resistance and Ohm's law. Direct current circuits. RC circuits. Magnetic field. Ampere's theorem. Magnetic materials. Time dependent electric and magnetic fields. Electromagnetic induction. Energy density of the electromagnetic field. Alternating current. Electromagnetic waves. Energy and momentum of the electromagnetic waves. Fermat's principle. Reflection and refraction. Interference.
Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODSwritten examination consisting of problems concerning the topics of the course. An additional oral examination could be requested.
LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIAin the written examination students are asked to know the laws of the electromagnetism and of the electromagnetic waves and to apply them to solve problems.
In the oral examination students are asked to demonstrate theorems and give definitions concerning the electromagnetism and the electromagnetic waves.
LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIAevaluation expressed by a number as follows: n/30, n>=18.
FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIAthe exam consists of both a written test and an oral test weighted as follows: 80% written examination, 20% oral examination. A positive score in the written examination is necessary to pass the exam.
