Prerequisites
Linear algebra, vectorial algebra, differential and integral calculus, geometry, physics
Learning outcomes
The course addresses statics as a theoretical support for the study of stability of architectural systems. Both
the analytical and the graphical approach will be provided, in particular the course will focus on equivalent
forces and stresses, constraints, and the equilibrium problem.
Program
Mass Geometry. Kinematical analysis of structures constituted by rigid bodies. Kinematical chains. Equations of equilibrium. Principle of virtual work for rigid bodies. Constraint reactions and interactions. Internal actions diagrams. Trusses. Symmetry and antisymmetry properties in structures. Differential equations of equilibrium for beams. Statics of wires. Oscillators.
Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODS
The learming evaluation is divided into two parts:
- a written test, consisting in the solution of two exercises to be completed in three hours;
- an oral exam, consisting in the discussion of the theory and some exercises.
LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIA
In order to have a positive result, the student must prove:
- to have reached a good understanding of the concepts of structural mechanics;
- to be capable of solving simple structures from the kinematics to the statics.
LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIAThe final mark, in thirtieth, is the result of a weighted average between the written test and the oral exam.
FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIAThe written test is preparatory to the oral exam. In order to acceede to the oral exam, the student must obtain the mark 18/30 at the written test. The maximum evaluation is obtained by proving an exhaustive knowledge of the contents of the course. The lode is reserved for those students who passed the written and oral exams with excellent results.
