The course is related to geometric design and material characteristics in road constructions
Program
Outlines on geometric (planimetrical and altimetrical) design of roads and overview of the corre-sponding Italian standards. Natural soil as construction material for road applications. Bearing ca-pacity of subgrades: main experimental method for evaluation. Aggregates: physical, chemical and mechanical properties related to single grain and overall loose mix. Aggregate gradation character-istics for bituminous mixes. Main experimental laboratory test methods for aggregates. Chemical properties of asphalt binder. Conventional characterization of asphalt binders based on CEN stan-dard test methods. Mix design of asphalt concretes and characterization of multi-layered flexible pavements. Main experimental test methods and in situ validation of asphalt mixes. Final overview of performance based technical specification for road materials.
Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODSThe examination consists of an oral test about the topics provided in the course program.
LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIADuring the oral test, the student should demonstrate to have an overall knowledge of the subject. The exposition should be clear and include an appropriate technical terminology. The maximum mark is achieved when a brilliant exposition is associated with a deep knowledge of the subject.
LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIAAssignment of the final mark on a 30-point scale, with possible merit attribution.
FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIAIn order to pass the examination with the minimum mark, the student must have a sufficient knowledge of all the topics demanded. The maximum mark can be achieved by means of a thorough analysis of the subject. The merit is assigned to the students which, through a brilliant exposition, show to have a deep knowledge of the subject.
