Learning outcomes
The course will analyze the current design trends for recovery and restoration; the course introduce the methods for defining degradation, and for comparing traditional and innovative construction techniques. The course addresses the main techniques for recovery and consolidation. The practical sessions involve exercises on the restoration of an existing complex having environmental and / or historical significance.

Program
Safety and conservation: evolution of the scientific positions and today's debate. How a masonry historical building works. Local mechanisms and particular structures (arches, vaults,…). How to design actions to recover and preserve a historical building and some of its constructive elements. Guidelines for monumental buildings. Semeiotic methods for assessing the vulnerability of historical buildings. Historical surfaces conservation. How to conserve frescoes on historical light vaults. Historical centres and buildings evacuation. Case studies.

Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODS
students are evaluated through 2 levels: - first level: evaluation of the annual exercises; - second level: oral exam on one or more topic

LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIA
if they want to have a positive evaluation, students have to demonstrate to have rightly assimilated the concepts pointed out during the course, that is, the design of correct interventions on architectural heritage throughout all the needed phases (from the critic survey to the definition of the new constructive details).

LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIA
a score (0-30) is assigned to each level. The final mark is the average value of the two level

FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIA
in order to have a posive evaluation, students have to reach at least the score of 18/30 in each level. The maximum evaluation is assigned for a complete knowledge of the topics for each level. The evaluation of ”30 cum laude” is assigned to students who demonstrate a particular skill both in oral exam and in the annual exercise.
