Prerequisites
Knowledge of main measurement techniques for mechanical and thermal quantities and of static and dynamic performance of measurement instrumentation.

Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide the knowledge needed for the design, implementation and management of advanced measurement systems and methods for quality control anf for diagnostics, based on new contactless tools and methods.

Program
1) Elements of feed-back control. The role of the sensor in feed-back loops. Tranfer function and analysis of system dynamic response, poles, asymptotic stability. The PID control algorithm. The fuzzy controller. Industrial controllers: PID and fuzzy, analog and digital. Examples of industrial controls. 2) Image acquisition and processing for measurement, automation and control. Elements of geometrical optics and diffraction. Image formation. Illumination, colour, industrial illuminators. Image sensors CCD and CMOS. Cameras, digital cameras, smart cameras, fast cameras. Digital image acquisition systems. main algorithms for image processing: hystograms, LUT, spatial filters, thresholhd, morphologic operators, spatial frequency domain, image correlation, pattern matching. Application examples. 3) Non contact measurement techniques: laser Dopple velocimetryr; Particle Image Velocimetry; laser Vibrometry; temperature measurement in infra-red, infra-red vision.

Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODS
Each student will prepare a laboratory project. An oral examination will be based on the work prepared and on the subjects of the course.

LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIA
Knowledge of the topics, capacity to expose the concepts.

LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIA
Quality of answers, commitment and of the student.

FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIA
he maximum mark is obtained upon optimal committment during the laboratory project, optimal mastering of the subjects, optimal ability to explain concepts.
