Natural soil as construction material for road applications. Soil Classification criteria. Compaction and bearing capacity of subgrades: main experimental method for evaluation. Road embankment construction. Moisture sensitivity and frost phenomenon of subgrades, and related protection techniques. Aggregates production and sampling. Physical, mechanical and chemical properties of aggregates: main experimental laboratory test for analysis. Aggregate physical and mechanical requirements for road mixtures and bituminous mixes. Unbound granular mixture and cement treated mixture: design and evaluation. Bituminous binders for road application. Chemical properties and conventional characterization of bituminous binders. Classification of bituminous binders based on European specifications. Mix design methodology and characterization of asphalt mixtures. Classification of road pavements. Empirical design of flexible road pavements. Pavement construction: mix asphalt facilities, transportation, laydown and compaction operation of asphalt mixtures layer, in situ test methods and control procedure on pavement. Final overview of performance based technical specification for road materials and construction.

Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODS
Final examination consists in an oral discussion concerning one or more topics argued at the lessons.

LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIA
At the oral examination student should prove a suitable understanding of the main features and specific use of materials as well as the technical activities in the field of road construction. A comprehensive knowledge and an adequately correct exposition with technical terminology of discussed subjects are required in order to pass the examination. The full marks will be achieved on the basis of a detailed understanding of the matter aimed to solve specific and practical engineering issues through a proper selection of materials and construction techniques.

LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIA
Allocation of the final mark which is expressed out of 30 with possibility of laude.

FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIA
A suitable understanding of all asked questions is required to pass the examination with the minumum mark (18 out of 30). Further score will be assigned on the basis of learning level of discussed topics. The full marks (i.e. cum laude) will be achieved to the students which showed clearness and brightness of exposition as well as a complete mastery of the matter.
