Credits 9
Hours 72
Period I
Language ENG

Prerequisites
Knowledge on fundamental aspects concerning the most common engineering materials and technical drawings is required.

Learning outcomes
To provide the student with: basic knowledge of the manufacturing processes of components and structures for mechanical systems; the concepts for their selection and design taking into account for economic and quality criteria; processes and machinery for plastic deformation, metal cutting and welding, and foundry.

Program
The transformation of raw materials into products. The process plan. METAL CASTING: Fundamentals of casting. Casting processes: sand casting and mold making, other expendable mold casting processes, permanent mold casting processes. Foundry practice. Casting quality. Metals for casting. Product design considerations. METAL FORMING AND SHEET METALWORKING: Fundamentals of metal forming and plasticity. Bulk deformation processes in metal working: open die forging, close die forging and other related processes. Sheet metal forming processes. Die and presses for bulk and sheet metalforming. MATERIAL REMOVAL PROCESSES: Theory of metal machining, cutting tool technology, machining operations (turning, drilling, reaming, milling, slotting and broaching) and machine tools. Grinding and finish operations. WELDING PROCESSES: Fundamentals of welding, welding processes: arc welding, protective gas arc welding: TIG, MIG, MAG processes. Resistance spot welding. LASER welding.

Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODS
The exam consists of a written test and an oral test. In the written exam, the student must answer 15 multiple choice questions and 3 open questions related to the content of the entire course. The oral test will verify the level of preparation showed in the written test.

LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIA
The student has to demonstrate the ability to deal with the analysis of manufacturing processes, with particular reference to the choice of the type of process and process parameters on the characteristics of the workpiece and cost-effectiveness of the process. The highest rating is achieved by demonstrating a thorough knowledge of the contents, exposed with complete mastery of technical language, and using appropriately such knowledge to solve simple problems.

LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIA
Grading scheme is based on a scale of 30 points. Successful completion of the examination will lead to grades ranging from 18 to 30.

FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIA
The final grade will be given by adding the evaluation of the written test with that of the oral examination. In the written test, the student can achieve up to a maximum of 30 points; the minimum score for admission to the oral exam is equal to 15 points. The oral exam will allow to assess the level of preparation showed in the written test.
