Learning outcomes
To provide the students with the principles and the methodologies used in modern engineering for structural and functional design of machines and mechanical systems.
Program
Concept of mechanical damage and the concept of equivalent voltage framed in mechanical design. The contact stresses: the theory of Hertz. Analysis of the fatigue behavior of materials. Procedures for design and verification of component fatigue stress at a high number of cycles; modelization of damage accumulation with variable loads. Criteria for selection of materials in mechanical engineering and experimental determination of the structural characteristics of materials. The concept of safety factor and outline of the probabilistic approach to design.
Pressure vessels. Axles and shafts, shrink fit systems: keys, splines. Gear, belts, chains. Removable and fixed joints: threaded connections, welding and riveting. Springs: torsion bars, coil springs, flexing springs. Rolling bearing and bushing, ball and roller bearings
Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODSWritten and oral examination
LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIAIn the written test, the student must demonstrate the ability to solve three design and/or verificatio questions, with the help of the formulas and mathematical tools presented during the lectures. In the oral examination, the student must answer two questions, showing that he had learned the main concepts and the theoretical basis for the construction of machines
LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIAA mark out of thirty will be given to each of the two tests
FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIAThe final mark will be the rounded up average of the votes of the written test and oral
