Prerequisites
It is required that the student knows the fundamental concepts of mathematical analysis, physics, mechanics, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics and electromagnetism
Learning outcomes
The course introduces the student to the measurement instrumentation for thermal and mechanical quantities, providing the elements necessary to understanding the measuring processes, the interaction between measure and measuring system, the static and dynamic characteristics of measuring systems, the uncertainty, the operating principles of sensors and transducers, and their use in laboratory and in the industrial field.
Program
The course presents the basic knowledge of mechanical and thermal measurements and testing methodologies. The measurement principles of the quantities of interest for industrial applications are shown through theoretical lectures, laboratory experiences and practical examples.
General concepts on measurement systems and procedures. Instrument utilization in industrial application and on-line testing. Static and dynamic calibration. Elements of signal analysis and digital data processing, including basics concepts for analysis in the frequency domain.
Traditional and innovative systems for the measurement of: dimension, displacement, strain, velocity of solids (translation, rotation), velocity of fluids, acceleration, force, torque, power, pressure, flow rate, temperature, heat flows.
Basics on data acquisition systems and digital devices (sampling, quantizing, coding, main devices).
Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODSThe examination consists in an oral discussion of the subjects of the course, the exercises and the possible experimental work
