Prerequisites
Knowledge of differential calculus and basic concept of theory of elasticity.

Learning outcomes
The course covers the basic elements of the Performance Based Building Design. They analyzed the performance of building elements and of buildings in which they are inserted. Their implementation is discussed in the various stages of the building process (planning, design, construction, management). In the laboratory are developed design studies on the relationship between architectural design and manufacture of building components; teaching activities of the laboratory is coordinated with the Area of disciplines of architectural design and restoration, building production and building technologies area.

Program
Reinforced and prestressed concrete: Materials: concrete and steel for RC and pre-stressed structures. Shrinkage and creep of concrete. Bond of steel bars embedded in concrete. Reinforced concrete structures. Details of project. Italian and European codes for RC and pre-stressed structural elements. Linear elastic analysis of RC structures and ultimate state: normal force; bending of RC beams; shear and torsion. Limit analysis of RC and pre-stressed RC structures: Flexural design of beams and one way slabs. Pre-stressed concrete strength design. Columns under bending and axial load. Slenderness effects. Shear and torsion. Design procedures. Calculus of thin plates. Foundation structures. Project in seismic area of common RC structures characterised by plane frames and horizontal slabs. Steel structures: Materials and methods of analysis. Trusses, frames, joints and constraints. Design of steel frames. Design of masonry structures in common buildings.

Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODS
Final exam is an oral discussion on the project after a written test.

LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIA
The student has to demonstrate by written test to know the theoretical program developed during the theoretical lectures. Further the student has to expalin the main phases of project of structural elements of a building to obtain a positive result.

LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIA
The written test and the discussion about project are evaluated from 0 to 30 points; the positive final vote is equal or higher than 18 points.

FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIA
The exam is considered positive with a vote equal or higher than 18 points. Maximum vote 30 points is reached with a very good structural knowledge; a maximum vote cum laude is assigned to excellent students.
