Learning outcomes
The course illustrates basic principles and applications of the finite element method for linear analysis of structures under static loading. Geometrical e constitutive non linearity are also briefly treated together with dynamical behavior of structures
Program
The course provides the basis for the MATRIX ANALYSIS of linear (elastic) structures.
Kinematics and statics of rigid structures: matrix formulation, Principle of the virtual work of the constraint reactions, Theorem of the Virtual Work, duality.
Matrix analysis of elastic elements: local stiffness, degree of freedom transformation, internal constraints and releases, global matrix assembly. External constraints, static condensation technique, mixed variable formulation. Conditioning of the solution. Structural matrix topology: band and profile optimization. Hints on the Weak Formulation of the continuum structural problems (physical meaning).
FINITE ELEMENT METHOD: energy formulation, discretization, shape functions, inter-element continuity. Morphology: quadrilateral, rectangular, Lagrangean, Serendipity, transition elements, triangular. Stiffness and mass matrices derivation.
Geometrical and non-linear behavior are briefly sketched, together with some topics about matrix dynamics of structures.
Brief history of matrix analysis of structures.
Training in FEM, numerical and symbolic codes.
