Seat Ingegneria
A.A. 2015/2016
Credits 9
Hours 72
Period II
Language ENG

Prerequisites
Knowledge of topics teached in the courses of “Calculus” (Analisi Matematica), “Geometry” (Geometria), and “Physics” (Fisica)

Learning outcomes
The course is aimed at providing the basic knowledge of the Mechanics of Solids and of the Strength of Materials. The students will learn to determine the stress and strain in simple beams, to check the admissibility of an elastic state, and to compute displacements of basic structures.

Program
1. Kinematics of rigid bodies 2. Statics of rigid bodies 3. Geometry and statics of beams 4. Principle of Virtual Works for rigid bodies 5. Centroid, area, moments of inertia 6. Kinematics of deformable bodies 7. Statics of deformable bodies 8. Constitutive relations 9. The De Saint-Venant problem and the technical theory of beams 10. Principle of Virtual Works for deformable bodies 11. Yield criteria

Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODS
The learming evaluation is divided into two parts: - a written test, consisting of the solution of two exercises to be completed in three hours; - an oral exam, consisting in the discussion of the theory and some exercises.

LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIA
In order to have a positive result, the student must prove: - to have reached a good understanding of the concepts of structural mechanics; - to be capable of solving simple structures from the kinematics to the statics.

LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIA
The final mark, in thirtieth, is the result of weighted average between the written test and the oral exam.

FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIA
The written test is preparatory to the oral exam. In order to acceede to the oral exam, the student must obtain the mark 18/30 at the written test. The maximum evaluation is obtained by proving an exhaustive knowledge of the contents of the course. The ”lode” is reserved for those students who passed the written and oral exams with excellent results.
