Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should have acquired knowledge and skills on the handling and design of devices and instruments for the measurement of physical quantities in the control and supervision of automation systems.
Program
This course aims to provide a deep knowledge in the fields of management and design of data acquisition systems for measuring several physical quantities, and elaboration of the signals acquired in this way, paying attention to diagnostic problems. The main subjects are stated in the following.
- Fault detection and isolation techniques.
- Fault diagnosis and fault tolerant systems.
- Elements of signal processing and digital filtering of acquired signals.
- Instrumentation for supervision and control of production processes.
Laboratory activities are planned to deepen the subjects covered during the lessons. Students are invited to develop a project on one or more topics of the course.
Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODSOral questions on the different subjects of the course, presentation and discussion of the developed project. 8 exams are planned on average.
LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIATo be positively evaluated, the student should be able to:
choose and size data acquisition systems for automation;
analyse and design signal conditioning and filtering systems;
design and develop fault detection and isolation systems;
choose, design and develop instrumentation for monitoring and control of processes.
The students can present and discuss the project in case developed in order to show the theoretical knowledge and practical skills listed above.
LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIAThe final mark is out of 30. In order to positively pass the oral examination, the student should prove a comprehensive knowledge of the subjects addressed within the course, expressed with a proper technical vocabulary. The highest mark will be attained
FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIAThe oral examination requires the student to answer to three questions. All the questions have the same weight. In case of presentation of a project, then the oral examination requires the student to answer only to two questions. Each of the two questions and the project have the same weight. The highest mark with honour will be attained by students who will prove a complete knowledge of the subjects addressed within the course.
