Prerequisites
Elements of modeling and control of dynamical systems; Elements of modeling and control of DC motors; Elements of power electronics.
Learning outcomes
This course provides knowledge of principles of operation and of the electrical and mechanical characteristics of electric motors. The main objective is to equip the students with the competence to design electrical motor control systems and to choose actuator systems for different industrial applications.
Program
The course deals with the analysis and design of electric drives. AC electric drives will be analyze in detail in order to design appropriate control schemes for these electric machines. The main topics of the course are given in the following. Park transform. Equivalent models of asynchronous and synchronous electrical machines. Control systems for asynchronous motors. Control systems for permanent magnet synchronous motors. Static converters. Inverter sizing and selection. Motion planning systems. Students are invited to develop a project on a topic of the course.
Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODSOral examination. A project on one of the topics covered during the lessons will be proposed to each student
LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIAThe student, during the oral examination, should present and discuss the eventual developed project and demonstrate that she/he has the necessary knowledge and methodological and technical competences to design electrical drives with the aim of identifying the most appropriate control schemes for a their efficient use. To successfully pass the oral exam the student has to demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of teaching content, presented with the use of proper technical terminology. The highest rating is achieved by demonstrating a thorough understanding of teaching content, exposed with complete mastery of technical language.
LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIAThe final mark is in thirtieths.
FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIAThe final mark will be assigned adding the evaluation of the oral examination and of the eventual developed project. The student can achieve up to a maximum of 10 points in the project. The oral exam will be divided into two or three questions, depending on whether or not the student will present the project. Each question will be evaluated with a score ranging from 0 to 10 points. The praise will be given to students who, having achieved the highest rating, have demonstrated complete mastery of the material.
