Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to give students the technical knowledge required to understand the functioning and role, within the product development processes, of the systems for three-dimensional geometric modeling. At the end of the course the student should be able to create three-dimensional geometric models of small assemblies, by using parametric feature-based MCAD tools and CAS (computer aided for styling) systems based on NURBS surfaces, developing and integrating the models based on the characteristics of the product to be represented.

Program
Role of geometic models in the product development process: characteristics and classification of MCAD systems; characteristics of the surface and solid models; type of user interaction supported by the different types of systems; application fields of the MCAD technology; criteria for the quality and usability assesment of 3D geometric models in industrial processes; criteria and techqniques to support standardisation, modification and re-use of geometric models. 3D geometric modelling techniques: free-form surface modelling techniques (patch modelling, global deformation modelling); solid modelling techniques (feature-based parametric modelling; explicit modelling). Interoperability of models: integrated systems, optimisation methods for data exchange, types of exportable data, formats of data exchange. Production of technical documentation: production of 2D technical tables, definition and automatic filling of the legend and the bill of materials; production of realistic images and animations; integration of 3D models in technical documents. Use of CAD systems for surface modelling and solid modelling for the development of integrated projects.

Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODS
The assessment of the students' learning level consists in the production of a modelling project and its oral presentation. The project is chosen by the student, in agreement with the Professor and is developed autonomously by means of using different types of 3D MCAD systems. Before the presentation, the studdent submits all the files related to the the developed project (component models, general models, technical tables, any rendering and animations, short report on the performed work according to a preset template); the files can be delivered on a CD-ROM or they can be uploaded on the eLearning platform of the course. During the presentation the student explains the methods, criteria and the choices adopted for the realisation of the project.

LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIA
In order to pass the exam the student has to prove, through the project and its presentation, his/her correct understanding of the aspects related to the development and integration of solid models and surfaces to be employed in the prodcut development processes.

LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIA
The marking of the project takes into account the following factors: complexity and quality of the forms and of the solid and surface components (from 1 to 8 points); complexity and quality of the general ensemble (from 1 to 8 points); clarity and accurac

FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIA
In order to have a positive evaluation, the student has to obtain at least eighteen points in the evaluation of the project and must answer in a satisfactory way during the oral exam. The maximum mark can be achieved by developing a complex project and showiing a deep understanding of the problems related to the use of geometric 3D and 2D models in the product development processes. The laude is reserved only to the students who have developed a very complex project and who make an impressive presentation and show a deep understanding of the concepts presented during the course.
