Credits 9
Hours 72
Period I
Language ENG

Prerequisites
Basic knowledge on machine mechanics, electrical engineering and calculus

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide the student with the concepts of mechanics needed for approaching the study of complex machines and possibly their synthesis.

Program
KINEMATICS AND DYNAMICS • kinematics of multi-loop linkages and spatial chains. • Comparison among different approaches for dynamic analysis. • Linear vibrations of multi dof's systems. • Bending and torsional vibrations. • Rotordynamics. MECHANICAL TRANSMISSIONS • Gearings and gearboxes. • Belts and chains • Linear modules MECHANISMS FOR MOTION GENERATION • Linkages. • Cams. • Mechanisms for intermittent motion. MECHATRONICS • Actuation principles (electric, hydraulic, pneumatic). • Servo mechanisms: drive selection, laws of motion. • Closed-loop systems. MACHINE DESIGN • design process • laws and standards • design tools (CAD, multibody simulators, FEM packages) • examples of design: the I.Ca.Ro. robot • design tutorials

Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODS
The examination is composed by a written exercise, an oral part and an optional project to be developed in small groups of students

LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIA
The examination is passed if the student proves he/she has understood the basics of functional design of machines and mechanisms. The maximum marks are assigned to the student who shows confidence in all fields of the programme.

LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIA
The mark 0 is assigned for a test that has not been developed or a question that has not been answered; the mark 18/30 indicates that the examination only meets the pass threshold, while the mark 30/30 is assigned for excellent performances.

FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIA
The student must gain a mark greater than 15/30 in both written and oral sessions: the final mark is a weighted sum of the partial marks, with the oral session weighted 60% and the written session 40%; in case the optional workgroup has been developed, the weights are the following: project: 30%, written exercise: 30%, oral discussion: 40%.
