Program
This course will address the operational issues and methodologies related to the development of shop drawings, to the management and programming of construction projects, to the surveying of the execution phase.
The topics of the course will be grouped in three main different phases.
In the first phase, an overview of project participants and basic requirements for construction site management will be provided. Then roles, responsibilities, authority and relationships among project participants will be further defined. Finally, the phases of construction projects, relevant legislation, technical standards and regulations (including health and safety) will be looked into.
Within the second phase of the course, the content of construction documents to be used on construction sites will be analyzed. To this purpose, the course will address the development of detailed plans and specifications into shop drawings and fabrication and construction schemes. Not only will requirements for correct drawings be provided, but also methodologies, calculation and technical information to evaluate the construction project's degree of compliance with its detailed design will be analyzed. Basics of schedule and cost management will be provided, too.
The third phase of this course will deal with both site layouting and control and operational issues. The former group of subjects is relative to layout planning and organization, site labor relations and control, documentation and record keeping at the construction site, site quality control, waste and environmental management, supply management and project closeout. The latter group of subjects will address well-established and state-of-the-art operational issues and procedures for the erection of the most popular types of sub-systems typically used in buildings, according to technical and safety constraints.
Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODSOne written test and one verbal examination. The written test is aimed at checking students' ability to deal with construction issues, while the verbal examination will be focused on the several topics of the course.
LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIAThe written test will allow students to show their capabilities in layout planning and site control. The verbal examination will be used to assess student's skills and their degree of knowledge on any subject of the course.
LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIABoth written and verbal texts will be ranked according to the ratio between correct answers and the overall number of questions.
FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIAAdmission to the verbal examination is conditioned upon the succesful completion of the written test. The final mark is weighed according to how knowledgeable each student is on each of the topics discussed.
