Prerequisites
Knowledge of differential calculus and basic concept of theory of elasticity.

Learning outcomes
This course provides students with the theoretical and practical tools for the design and testing of structural elements made of reinforced concrete and of structural elements and joints of steel. The course consists of theoretical lessons and practical exercises on the main structural elements of the constructions made of reinforced concrete and steel.

Program
Reinforced concrete: - Materials: concrete and steel for RC and pre-stressed structures. Shrinkage and creep of concrete. Bond of steel bars embedded in concrete. Reinforced concrete structures. Details of project. Italian and European codes for RC and pre-stressed structural elements. Linear elastic analysis of RC structures and ultimate state: normal force; bending of RC beams; shear and torsion. Limit analysis of RC and pre-stressed RC structures: Flexural design of beams and one way slabs. Pre-stressed concrete strength design. Columns under bending and axial load. Slenderness effects. Shear and torsion. Design procedures. Calculus of thin slabs. Foundation structures. Project in seismic area of a common RC structures characterised by plane frames and horizontal slabs. Steel structures for buildings: Materials and methods of analysis; Trusses, frames, joints and constraints. Design of masonry structures in common buildings.

LEARNING EVALUATION METHODS
Final exam is an oral test after a written test

LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIA
The student has to demonstrate by written test to know the method of calculus of elastic frames; by oral test the student has to explain the project developed during the year and to answer to questions put about the theoretical program. The knowledge of basic concepts of RC structures, steel structures and masonry is necessary to obtain a positive result.

LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIA
The written test, the discussion about project and the theoretical knowledge of structural concepts and models are evaluated from 0 to 30 points; the positive final vote is equal or higher than 18 points.

FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIA
The exam is considered positive with a vote equal or higher than 18 points. Maximum vote 30 points is reached with a very good structural knowledge; a maximum vote cum laude is assigned to excellent students.
