Program
The course aims to provide the students with the knowledge and skills needed for the selection and design of building foundations Criteria for foundation selection. Bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations on fine and coarse soils. In situ testing for soil characterisation. Bearing capacity and settlement of piles under axial loads. Pile spacing and group action. Pile loading tests. Negative skin friction. Piles under lateral loads. Improvement of soils. Sands liquefaction.
Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODSThe learning evaluation will be done in two steps: 1. a written examination, where the students have to solve exercises related to the topic of the lectures; - 2. an interview (oral examination) which will involve all the topics discussed during the lectures, including exercised aimed at checking the application of the general theory.
LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIATo obtain a positive evalution, the candidate must get a sufficient evaluation of his/her written examination and after that show that he/she understood the topics developed in the lectures.
LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIAThe final evaluation, expressed by a number from 0 to 30 (positive evaluation from 18 to 30), will be a ponderate average of the evalutions obtained in the written an oral examination.
FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIAThe student must do preliminary the written examination and to get a positive evaluation (>18/30) to be admitted to the oral examination. To get an overall positive evaluation, the student must get a positive evaluation (>18/30) in both written and oral examinations. The maximum score (30/30) is obtained with a deep knowledge of all the topics. The summa cum laude is for students which will show special cleverness during the examination.
