Notions of electromagnetism, calculus and linear algebra.
Learning outcomes
The aims of the course are: to provide a good theoretical and practical knowledge of the different methods used to solve memoryless circuits; - to extend concepts and methodologies to circuits with memory, for the determination of their transient response and of the steady-state condition.
Program
1. Fundamentals of electrical circuits.
2. Memoryless linear time-invariant circuits. Theorems of Thevenin and Norton.
3. Analysis of dynamical systems via the Fourier transform.
4. The method of phasors and related results: Complex-valued power, Boucherot's theorem.
5. Introduction to the MATLAB language: Examples of application to solving electrical systems and to simulating non-linear dynamical systems.
Development of the examination
LEARNING EVALUATION METHODSLearning evaluation methods:
- a written test, to be completed in 90 minuts, about the solution of an electrical circuit;
- a written test, to be completed in 30 minutes, consisting in the discussion of a theoretical topic.
Both tests may be taken in different exam sessions and in any order.
The theory" test may be replaced, upon request, by a project about the application of MATLAB to solving an electrical circuit or to simulating a non-linear dynamical system."
LEARNING EVALUATION CRITERIAIn order to pass both tests, the candidate will need to show a good understanding of the contents as well as a good ability to explain them correctly and by using an adequate technical language. The maximum score will be given to those candidates that will show a deep understanding of the course's contents.
LEARNING MEASUREMENT CRITERIABoth tests will be graded by an integer in the range 0-30. The final evaluation will be calculated as the mean value of the two. In case of non-integer mean value, the rounding will be determined after a short interview with the candidate.
FINAL MARK ALLOCATION CRITERIAThe maximum score will be given to those candidates that will show a deep understanding of the course's contents and a very good ability to explain them.
The distinction mark" will be given to those candidates who prove an outstanding ability."
